AI at the Point of Clinical Decision

A thought that carried through the discussion on HCP engagement at the point of healthcare decision-making at Fierce Pharma Week 2026: the future isn't about generating more information. It's about delivering the right intelligence in the right context.

Healthcare professionals already have enormous amounts of information available to them. The real constraint is time and context — knowing which piece of information matters for this patient, at this moment, given everything else that is already known.

AI creates the opportunity to move from a search-interpret-connect-decide sequence toward systems that help bring the relevant information and context together at the moment it's needed, reducing the cognitive burden of assembly so more attention goes to the decision itself.

But healthcare also illustrates exactly why a human-in-control design principle matters. AI can synthesize, surface, and contextualize information, and it can meaningfully reduce cognitive burden. Clinical judgment and accountability, however, remain human responsibilities. As AI becomes embedded more deeply into clinical workflows, designing that boundary correctly is just as important as model performance — arguably more so.

For anyone building decision-support tools in this space, the design question worth returning to often is: where exactly does synthesis end and judgment begin — and does the interface make that boundary obvious to the person using it?
